Fredi Beleri released on parole

TIRANA, Sept 2 /ATA/ The Fier District Court on Monday released Fredi Beleri on parole.

Fier district court accepted the request of his defense lawyer after three failed attempts to free Beleri on conditional release.

“The court accepted the request for conditional release, with six weeks left until the expiry of his sentence,” Beleri’s lawyer, Geni Juzari, confirmed after the hearing.

Beleri was sentenced to two years in prison on charges of electoral fraud by the Appeal Court against Corruption and Organized Crime, whose ruling also caused him to lose his mandate. He was arrested on May 12 last year.

Beleri was elected as Greece’s MEP while in prison.

Fredi Beleri was sworn in as a MEP in the European Parliament after receiving permission for five days from the Directorate of Prisons.

After taking the oath, he returned to Albania to continue serving his sentence in Fier prison facility. /j.p/ sm/
