EC President Von der Leyen: TIA, Europe’s fastest airport

TIRANA, Sept 2 /ATA/ – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted Monday that Tirana International Airport is Europe’s fastest growing airport.

In her opening remarks at the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia, Ursula von der Leyen focused on progress of the Western Balkans on the path towards European Union integration.

“Tirana is Europe’s fastest growing airport. European companies are setting up shop in Serbia and Bosnia Herzegovina at an accelerated pace. Kosovo’s economic reforms have been heralded by the IMF and are generating economic benefits. North Macedonia’s investments in infrastructure are a source of inspiration. Montenegro has just seen its credit rating upgraded on the back of its sound policies,” EC President stated.

Von der Leyen added that three Western Balkan countries may join Single Euro Payments Are by the end of the year, saying the move would generate savings of over 500 million euros every year.

EC President underlined the idea of gradual integration of the region.

“It was this strategic reasoning that urged us to rethink our enlargement strategies and to come with the idea of a gradual integration. Exactly one year ago, we launched the new Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. And this work is beginning to show results,” she said.
