Kosovo PM Kurti: Consultations on Iber Bridge reopening underway

PRISHTINA, Aug 28 /ATA/ – Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said Wednesday that his government was consulting with the international allies on the plans to reopen the main bridge over the River Iber separating the Serb-dominated North and South Mitrovica.

Addressing a regular meeting of his cabinet, Kurti announced that two foreign ministers of two NATO member states will visit Kosovo next week, alongside Thomas Goffus, NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Operations, who will arrive on Thursday.

He also said that a Danish delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will be visiting the country today.

The government head said that ongoing consultations with allies will address the bridge’s physical stability, its appearance, and environmental clean-up, while awaiting the final report, hinting a shift in his approach and intensifying efforts to secure international support for reopening the Iber Bridge in Mitrovica.

A day ago, Kurti met with Admiral Stuart Munsch, NATO’s Joint Force Command head, with talks focusing on the security situation in Kosovo.

Kurti’s change in strategy follows increasing international pressure, with the United States, the EU, and NATO’s KFOR mission opposing the current plan to open the bridge.

Earlier this month, Kosovo government announced its plans to open the Iber Bridge to traffic as the bridge is currently open to pedestrians only.
