SP, DP support draft resolution calling on Greece to scrap war law

TIRANA, July 9 /ATA/ – Albania’s ruling Socialist Party and the main opposition Democratic Party have voiced their support for a draft resolution, calling on Greece to a World War II-era law that technically has left the two countries at war.

The Minister of State for the Relations with Parliament Elisa Spiropali affirmed Tuesday that the Socialist majority backs the draft resolution tabled by the Democracy and Integration parliamentary group.

In a press statement following the meeting of the Conference of the heads of parliamentary groups, Spiropali noted that the Albanian government has made utmost efforts to convince Greek government to abolish the war legislation, considering it “an absurd, unnecessary and outdated law.”

“Not only in our bilateral efforts, not only the statements by the Greek foreign ministers over the years, including the statements issued by Mr. Kotsias, who calls the law a historical stupidity, or the statement by Mr. Dendias, the former foreign minister who calls it ‘an unnecessary atavism’, but even in the closest meetings with our counterparts and with the Greek government, we have constantly presented our position,” Spiropali said.

The Secretary General of the Party for Justice, Integration and Unity (PDIU), Mesila Doda told reporters that the war law between Albania and Greece is absurd and as such should be scrapped by the neighboring country.

Doda underlined that both Albania and Greece are NATO members and maintaining the state of war law is an historical and legal absurdity.

Doda said that the draft resolution will be included on agenda of parliament session on July 18.
