Basha: EU integration process requires currently missing reforms

TIRANA, June 25 /ATA/ – Lulzim Basha, the leader of the Euro-Atlantic Democrats, stated Tuesday that the European Union integration process calls for a set of currently missing reforms, saying the next year’s parliamentary elections are an opportunity for change.

In a televised interview, Basha commented on the latest developments in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe following the recent EP elections, with the European People’s Party (EPP) being confirmed as main political party.

He said that the European Union will restart the enlargement engines and then it is up to the EU candidate countries to speed up their membership process.

However – according to him – this process would require currently missing reforms in Albania.

Basha also drew attention to the U.S. Department of State Report, claiming that the report “ranks Albania as one of the most corrupt states after 12 years of the Socialist government.”

“After 12 years in office, this government’s main export is Albanians themselves, whose mass exodus remains a sharp problem for the EU member states too and it is a topic up for discussion at the Council of Europe,” he said.

According to Basha, the Euro-Atlantic Democrats are the only political formation that has already unveiled a complete program with the assistance of 100 local and foreign experts.
