PM Rama: Albania rejected migrant deal with Great Britain

TIRANA, June 3 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said in an interview aired on Sunday evening on Rai3’s Report program that Albania had turned down a request from Great Britain and had accepted a migrant deal with Italy due to what he termed as “a different synergy with the neighboring country.”

According to Rama, “history has shown that Italy is Albania and Albania is Italy.”

The government head called for a common approach Europe to address migration challenges in Europe, saying “sending them to third countries is not a solution.”

“We face a situation when we need a common European approach. It is not a matter of daily politics and electoral interest. It is a huge topic for it to become a subject of daily political debate, because when taking office everyone thinks differently and thinks about doing the same thing, namely left wing and right wing parties in Italy,” PM Rama said.

PM Rama affirmed the importance of bilateral agreements like the one with Italy. He pointed out the mutual benefits such agreements bring to both Albania and Italy, emphasizing the need to manage migration flows effectively while upholding human rights and dignity.

PM Rama also stated that Albania cannot address the migration issue, no matter what the country does to help.

“This is a problem we can solve together only. One cannot transfer this issue, but should hit it instead. The European Union sends migrants to third countries. However, I don’t think that involvement of the third countries is the solution,” he stated.
