Bardhi says DP parliamentary group won’t support anti-corruption resolution

TIRANA, May 27 /ATA/ – The Chair of the Democratic Party’s parliamentary group Gazment Bardhi stated at parliament’s session on Monday that it was not possible to combat corruption by adopting resolutions.

“Corruption cannot be fought with words and resolutions,” the senior opposition official said, announcing that the DP parliamentary group won’t back the Socialist Party’s anti-corruption resolution, an initiative aimed at fighting corruption and advancing good governance in Albania.

“The only positive aspect to single out from today’s government and this Prime Minister is the fact that it took them more than 4000 days to realize and acknowledge that a special and resolute effort is needed against corruption,” Bardhi said.

“Fighting the widespread corruption that has taken hold of Prime Minister Edi Rama’s administration like never before should become a national priority, because it is a matter of critical importance for the future of Albania,” Bardhi added.

According to him, the DP parliamentary group has strongly supported the fight against corruption and efforts to advance good governance and the rule of law in the country.

The government head called on opposition to support the anti-corruption resolution, stating that the initiative is aimed at building a stronger state and combating corruption, with the goal of securing Albania’s membership in the European Union by 2030.

In his remarks, Rama highlighted the persistent issue of corruption, describing it as a deep-rooted problem inherited from Ottoman times and the transitional phase of incomplete capitalism. He stressed that his government, through reforms and relinquishing political control over the judiciary, has begun to address this issue, but acknowledged that the fight against corruption is far from over.
