Socialist majority to forward anticorruption resolution to parliament next Monday

TIRANA, May 23 /ATA/ – The ruling Socialist Party has put forward an initiative aimed at fighting corruption and advancing good governance in Albania.

The proposal was tabled by the chair of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group Bledi Çuçi at a meeting of the heads of parliamentary groups on Thursday, suggesting that a significant draft resolution be forwarded to parliament next Monday, May 27, as part of the efforts to deepen good governance efforts, the rule of law, and the fight against corruption so that Albania can join the European Union by.

The proposal seeks to address fundamental issues regarding governance and corruption.

Responding to inquires from the Democratic Party’s lawmaker Jorida Tabaku, the senior Socialist official clarified why adoption of the resolution and establishment of a Special Committee to oversee its implementation was indispensable. Çuçi clarified that the initiative doesn’t take way the competencies of other bodies, but rather complements existing efforts to combat corruption and promote good governance in the country.

“The government cannot tackle these challenges alone and that’s why we are taking this initiative to parliament. The government is just one of the institutions that will report on the good governance and the fight against corruption. The initiative doesn’t encroach upon the competences of the European Integration Council or other bodies. The screening process serves as a main foundation for launching such an initiative, prioritizing the fight against corruption and implementation of good governance. We have demanded inclusiveness in parliament,” Çuçi said.

The opposition lawmaker Jorida Tabaku said that the resolution showed that the government acknowledges the endemic corruption existing in all institutions.

The resolution aims to establish mechanisms to strengthen transparency, accountability, and integrity within governmental institutions, crucial elements for fostering trust and stability within the EU.
