DP Chairman says electoral reform committee paralyzed for over two months

TIRANA, May 4 /ATA/ – The Democratic Party chairman Lulzim Basha stated Saturday that a  parliamentary ad hoc Committee for electoral reform had been paralyzed and eliminated for over two months now.

Addressing a meeting with his party supporters, Basha blamed the ruling majority and the DP’s Refoundation faction for deliberately blocking the electoral reform.

“The electoral reform is yet another example clearly showing who is fighting for Albanians and DP supporters. They dispersed the electoral reform committee as they wanted to build another 3 plus three cell. The electoral reform committee has been paralyzed for more than two months now through the help of those who consider themselves as opposition, but are just an appendix of PM Edi Rama,” Basha said.

He noted that DP has advocated for an electoral system that fosters open competition, equal voting rights, and inclusiveness, including proposals for open lists, a unified electoral zone, diaspora voting facilitation, and electronic voting and counting.

DP chairman also reiterated his unwavering support for the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK).

During the meeting with DP members, Basha emphasized the importance of standing firm in support of SPAK, asserting that opposition to the Special Prosecution Office is incompatible with democratic principles.

“You cannot claim to be a democrat and simultaneously oppose efforts to combat corruption and SPAK,” Basha asserted, addressing the gathering.
