DP resolution on political situation: Undermining electoral reform, threat to democracy

TIRANA, April 8 /ATA/ – The Democratic Party’s (DP) leadership approved a resolution on Sunday, assuring the public opinion and the international partners of the main opposition party’s commitment to collaborative efforts in building a robust rule of law and functional democracy by strongly supporting the new justice bodies in Albania.

In a press statement on Monday, DP said it convened to deliberate upon the recent political and institutional landscape of the country. In response to these developments, the party’s leadership issued a comprehensive resolution outlining its position and commitments.

DP said that the judicial reform is yielding results and “this is the reason why the ruling Socialist Party and a group of opposition MPs have joined votes to discourage the new justice bodies.”

DP resolution notes the promising efforts made in judicial reform, emphasizing the tangible progress in combating corruption, organized crime, and impunity. Acknowledging the pivotal role of institutions such as the Special Anticorruption and Anticrime Prosecution Structure (SPAK) and the Special Courts, DP underscored their widespread public support and trust.

However, the main opposition party expressed concern over attempts by certain political factions, including the Socialist Party and elect opposition lawmakers, to undermine these achievements, saying that parliamentary actions lacked transparency and aimed at impeding the effectiveness of new justice bodies and fostering a hostile political climate.

DP advocated for an electoral system that fosters open competition, equal voting rights, and inclusivity, including proposals for open lists, a unified electoral zone, diaspora voting facilitation, and electronic voting and counting.
