EP rapporteur Santos: Greece statements over Himara Mayor case, deplorable

TIRANA, March 27 /ATA/ – The European Parliament’s rapporteur on Albania Isabel Santos stated Wednesday that she deplored Greece’s statements over the Mayor of Himara Fredi Beleri, who is standing trial on vote buying charges.

Speaking at a press conference, MEP Santos Santos said:”I deplore such a statement from Greece. As far as I know, the judicial authorities are doing their job and this is a case concerning the elections.”

“We should wait for the court’s ruling since the case is still being reviewed by the judiciary,” Santos said.

“If all the countries were to impose sanctions or issue such statements when a citizen of theirs stands trial the world would be horrible,” she said.

“We will reach a conclusion once the justice renders its verdict. I am following the case very attentively, but I am waiting for the verdict,” Santos said.

Fredi Beleri, the candidate of the “Together We Win” coalition for Himara, was arrested on vote bribery charges on May 12, two days ahead of last year’ mayoral elections. He has been found guilty and awaits sentencing by the court.
