Kosovo-Serbia talks in Brussels end without solution to currency ban issue

TIRANA, March 25 /ATA/ -The latest round of Kosovo-Serbia negotiation talks in Brussels on Monday ended without any substantive progress on the controversial issue of the Serbian dinar use within Kosovo’s territory.

Besnik Bislimi, Kosovo’s chief negotiator, pointed out the profound differences in the proposals forwarded by each side at today’s meeting, according to the Radio Free Europe.

Bislimi said that additional talks are needed, adding that consensus was found on the necessity of scheduling another round of discussions to explore potential avenues towards a viable solution.

He said that Kosovo had tabled a constructive proposal designed to facilitate financial assistance to the beneficiaries without violating the existing Central Bank regulation or Kosovo’s legal framework.

Bislimi declined to disclose details of the proposals in order to preserve the integrity of the ongoing negotiations details.

On his part, Serbia’s chief negotiator, Petar Petković, contended that Pristina had not demonstrated a willingness to compromise.

He blamed Kosovo for presenting a proposal that would not lead to a compromise solution and announced that another round of talks will be held next month.

Today’s meeting served as a follow-up to last week’s dialogue, during which both parties committed to introducing fresh proposals aimed at resolving the complications arising from a new policy instituted by the Central Bank of Kosovo. This policy mandates the exclusive use of the euro for all cash transactions within Kosovo, a regulation that became effective on February 1.
