TIRANA, March 12 /ATA/ – The United States Embassy and the Delegation of the European Union in Tirana praised Tuesday the latest developments in the Parliament of Albania as the ruling Socialist Party and the main opposition Democrat Party agreed earlier today on establishment of the parliamentary inquiry committees and deliver on the electoral reform in an accord aimed at restoring normalcy to the parliament’s proceedings.
US Embassy said in a statement that functional institutions are crucial for any healthy democracy.
“The United States Embassy in Tirana is encouraged by the announcement regarding the return to normal order in Parliament. Functional institutions are crucial for any healthy democracy and elected members should exercise their duties and responsibilities in good faith within Parliament,” the Embassy said in its statement
The EU Delegation noted that a well-functioning parliament is essential to accompany Albania’s path to EU accession.
“We welcome the announced return to normalcy in the Parliament. As we have said before, a well-functioning parliament is essential to accompany Albania’s path to EU accession, which is the country’s strategic objective, supported by an overwhelming majority of its people,” the EU Delegation said in its statement.
