TIRANA, March 7 /ATA/ – The Teacher’s Day, an important national education and culture event in the country, is celebrated annually throughout Albanian speaking territories on Thursday, March 7 that commemorates the first secular school with subjects taught in Albanian, opened in Korça on the same day in 1887.
A series of festive events take place in every school across the country as pupils, students and parents honor and appreciate teachers for their significant contributions to education and society.
Primary schoolchildren in particular bring their teachers bouquets of flowers to their teachers and the Teacher’s Day is celebrated through songs and poems.
Teacher’s Day is dedicated to the educational staff of schools and universities and on this day, we all together honor the best traditions of the Albanian national school.
Teacher’s Day marks the day when the first secular Albanian school opened on March 7th, 1887, mostly known as “Mësonjëtorja”, in the south-eastern city of Korça, successfully crowning tremendous efforts of the Albanian National Movement to provide and promote mother tongue-based education.
Opening the first secular school was a significant victory for the Albanian people. Due to Ottoman rule, up to this period, teaching was performed secretly. Since that day, March 7 marks the National Teacher’s Day and is celebrated by all Albanians wherever they are.
