Peleshi: We want to enter into weapons industry

TIRANA, February 28/ATA/ Minister of Defense Niko Peleshi said in a television interview that the summit held this Wednesday between the countries of Southeast Europe and Ukraine in Tirana, where the President of Ukraine Zelensky, was also present, confirmed once again the importance of our country in the region.

According to Peleshi, the summit gave a strong signal to Russia and the world that the Western Balkans has no longer time for conflicts and to return to conflicts.

“This summit has given to Albania the importance the country has in the region and Southeast Europe,” said Peleshi.

Peleshi added that Albania wants to restore the weapons production industry.

“The war in Ukraine is a fierce war against a country like Russia. Ukraine is not only fighting for itself, it is also fighting for the rest of the democratic world. Their heroism will not be enough if they are not supplied with weapons, ammunition and technology… You have heard the issue of supplies, limited or exhausted capacities of some countries for the production of ammunition, that is why Ukraine is also looking at markets and alternative options”, said Peleshi.

“Albania is one of the few countries in Europe and the region that does not have a weapons manufacturing industry. It is an industry that provides important income in the country’s economy, but also in strengthening our defense capacity, at a time we are living in, where peace and stability are increasingly threatened. The Poliçani factory does not work; it used to produce cartridges of several calibers. There is Mjekës plant, but only certain types of cartridges are produced there. We want to get into this industry. We are looking for investments; we have taken serious steps to draw up a feasibility study”, said Peleshi further./r.e/p.s./
