TIRANA, Feb 6 /ATA/ – Co-chairman of the Ad-Hoc Parliamentary Committee on the Electoral Reform, Enkelejd Alibeaj described disruption of the Committee meeting on Tuesday “as a regular show staged by those who reject the electoral reform.”
In a press statement, Alibeaj apologized to reporters and civil society representatives, who were attending the Committee meeting.
“These are scenes we have wished to avoid, sticking to the principle that Parliament and the Commission should not become the arena where they flex their muscles.”
“Parliament should be the venue where citizens’ interests are discussed and defended. The majority wants Parliament to become a heinous theatre, so that the Electoral Reform fails and wants the elections to take place under the current Electoral Code,” Alibeaj said.
The meeting of the electoral reform committee has once again failed after opposition MPs blocked the meeting and did not allow the co-chairman of the committee, Damian Gjiknuri to enter the meeting room.
The Democratic Party’s faction supporting former PM Sali Berisha has recently disrupted the meetings of the parliamentary committee in charge of the electoral reform, arguing that this committee is only represented by the Democratic Party’s faction supporting Lulzim Basha as party chairman.
