Defence Minister: Situation calmer after rain and heavy snow

TIRANA, Jan 21 /ATA/ – Situation has significantly improved on Sunday a day after unsettled weather with rain and heavy snow hit various parts of Albania, causing power outages, difficult icy conditions on some national roads and rural segments, mostly in the country’s most remote areas.

Defence Minister Niko  Peleshi said that the situation is calmer after the torrential rain and heavy snow, adding that civil emergency and local teams are still on alert and working around the clock to clear snow and ice from roads and ensure normal traffic flow.

“Icy conditions still prevail on certain roads in the areas of Shkoder, Kukes, Diber and Mirdite due to freezing temperatures,” Peleshi said.

Defence Minister also said that roads in the south-eastern Albanian region of Korça are passable and open to traffic and urged motorists to use winter tires and chain tires.

“Teams from the power distribution operator have been dispatched to various affected areas to fix defects due to severe weather conditions,” he concluded.
