Zhupa: UNESCO report is kept under wraps

TIRANA, Jan 9 /ATA/ The Democratic Party MP, Ina Zhupa, said on Tuesday in a media statement that the report of the UNESCO mission on Butrinti Park is kept from the Constitutional Court, while UNESCO is under pressure not to publish this report.

Zhupa said that the request on the concession of Butrinti has been filed with the Constitutional Court a year ago, and as part of the process, the group of DP MPs has asked for the opinion of UNESCO, given that Butrinti is a world heritage site under UNESCO protection.

According to her, the General Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Center, Lazare Eloundou Assomo, confirms that the October 2022 mission report has been sent to the Albanian government, specifically the National Institute of Cultural Heritage.

“The report is kept from the Constitutional Court, meanwhile UNESCO is under pressure not to publish this report. The representative of the government in the court gave false testimony and provided fabricated evidence to prove this report does not exist,” said Zhupa.

“Of course, the situation clearly shows that we are dealing with a report that does not sit well with the government and the AADF concessionaire. Otherwise, they would not have kept it from the Constitutional Court and they would not have asked UNESCO not to publish this report”, she pointed out.

“We are waiting for the steps and decisions that the Constitutional Court will take, hoping that it will be in line with the Constitution, justice and the national interest. The court should receive the report and we, the parties in the process, should be recognized and express ourselves about it.
“Butrinti is an UNESCO asset and an asset of Albania, and it should and will remain so at all costs”, said Zhupa.
