SPAK requests authorization from parliament to arrest Berisha

TIRANA, Dec 12 /ATA/ The Special Prosecution Against Organized Crime and Corruption requests authorization from the Assembly to execute the security measure which has been changed from “Compulsory appearance” to “House Arrest” or ” detention” for former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who is being investigated by the special anti-corruption structure in connection with the procedures followed for the privatization of the former “Partizani” sports complex.

According to official sources from SPAK, the security measure is changed from “Compulsory appearance” to “House Arrest” or “Pre-trial detention” because the former Prime Minister Berisha did not abide by the security measure issued by the special prosecution, that of mandatory appearance. As a consequence, in accordance with the legal provisions of the criminal procedure code for these cases, SPAK has the right to request tighter security measure, which is house arrest or pre-trial detention.

“We have made a request for authorization to execute the altered security measure”, sources from SPAK told ATA.

Berisha is charged with having committed the criminal offenses of “Passive corruption of high state officials or local elected officials”, in complicity with his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi. According to SPAK, Sali Berisha, who at that time held the post of prime minister, put pressure on the administration to conclude the privatization procedures of the former club “Partizani” as soon as possible in favor of others, including his son-in-law who netted about 5.4 million euros.
