Parliament Speaker: Constitutional changes cleared way to justice system reform

TIRANA, Nov 27 /ATA/ – Parliament Speaker Lindita Nikolla said in her remarks at an event on the 25th anniversary of country’s Constitution on Monday that Albania has now a better consolidated Constitution and modern legal framework.

Nikolla stated that Albanian Assembly has been always determined to defend the Constitution.

“The Assembly should not and will not the elected members to dictate their own will over the people and voters’ will,” she stated.

Assembly Speaker focused on the constitutional changes designed to deliver on the justice system reform, saying the reform put an end to the myth of impunity.

“The previous justice system had sufficiently shown it was unable to reform itself and respond to the country’s new development dynamics. The system could be reformed outside it through support of a part of the system with strong integrity. This turned out to be the only way to liberate the society, development, public interest and the citizens from an unjust and corrupt justice system,” she said.

According to her, all these circumstances and needs lead to the constitutional changes to overhaul the country’s judiciary.

“On July 22, 2016, Parliament unanimously adopted the constitutional changes that paved the way to the justice system reform and parliament strongly supports this reform,” she said.

Parliament Speaker expressed gratitude to the international partners, the United States of America and the European Union for supporting the justice system reform in Albania.
