DP proposes amendments to raise education budget

TIRANA, Nov 21 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) lawmaker Merita Bakiu said in a press statement on Tuesday that DP proposes that the public spending on education is raised up to 5% of Albania’s GDP in 2024.

According to her, the financial effect of the increased state budget for the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, would be easily covered by cutting the government’s operative spending, the non-priority investment projects and the concessionary public-private partnership contracts.

Commenting the approval of the 2024 state budget bill and the accompanying fiscal package by Parliament a day ago, Bakiu said that the main financial documents of the year fail to properly support the country’s real economy.

“The proposed budget doesn’t support entrepreneurship, it doesn’t support freelance professionals, education, health, agriculture, tourism, retirees and social categories in need, including the former politically persecuted people, and youth. The state budget supports the oligarchs only,” she claimed.

Bakiu added that DP had proposed eight amendments designed to make the state budget serve Albanian citizens.

As a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, she announced that DP has filed an amendment calling for increased education spending.
