Albania opposition to try to disrupt parliament session as lawmakers convene to debate 2024 state budget bill

TIRANA, Nov 20 /ATA/ – Albanian opposition MPs have warned they will seek to disrupt parliament session on Monday as lawmakers will convene to begin the debate on the 2024 state budget.

As it has been the case during the previous parliament sessions, when opposition lawmakers have caused commotion in Parliament, the opposition lawmakers have already announced they will seek to disrupt today’s session, when the proposed state budget bill and the accompanying fiscal package are expected to be approved.

The chair of the parliamentary group of one faction in the deeply divided main opposition Democratic Party, Gazment Bardhi posted today a picture showing Republican Guard officers who have been allegedly ordered to block opposition lawmakers so that they fail in their attempt to disrupt the session by taking their seats and stack chairs on top of each other in the central hall, a scenario that has been into play in the previous sessions.

“Today we have come across an unlawful order issued by (Parliament Speaker) Lindita Nikolla to besiege the central hall of the plenary session by using special units of the Republican Guard, officially proclaiming this way the personal and autocratic state of Edi Rama. As the attached picture shows, the Republic Guard members have been ordered to do ‘rehearsals’ how to surround the opposition lawmakers during Monday’s Parliament session,” Bardhi claimed.
