DP lawmaker: Pension scheme has collapsed due to youth migration and informality

TIRANA, Sept 14 /ATA/ – The opposition Democratic Party lawmaker Jorida Tabaku praised a recent agreement on social insurances and pension rights recognition with Montenegro, however claiming that Albania’s current pension scheme had collapsed.

The opposition MP Tabaku blamed the high migration rate and the informal economy.

“The pension scheme in our country has collapsed for two main reasons; the high migration rate and informality. What does the government plan to do for the migrating young people? What measures will be taken to tackle the high migration rate? This is a social and economic problem,” Tabaku said in remarks at Thursday’s session of parliament.

She said that pension indexation has been lower than the inflation rate.

Tabaku called on government to make more intense efforts to reach pension rights agreements with Greece and Italy.
