TIRANA, Sept 9 /ATA/ The chairman of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, on Saturday paid tribute to the Postriba uprising, calling it one of the first major acts in Albania and Europe ruled by communism to join the family of free European nations.
“We bow with respect to hundreds of patriots and intellectuals, to the people from upcountry and clergymen, who inspired and courageously led the first movement for freedom in communist Europe, which shook the inhuman regime to the core, a painful wound engraved in our common memory,” Basha wrote on his social media account.
According to him, its bloody oppression by the terrorist machinery of Enver Hoxha-led regime will be long remembered for the destruction of important families belonging to the social, intellectual and moral elite of Albania, such as the families of Jup Kazazi, Osman Haxhi, Idriz Tahir and Abdullah Sahiti.
“In the first hours and days of the uprising, the communists executed 28 people in Postriba without trial. The persecutions also extended to Shkodra, Mirdita, Pukë and Malësi i Madhe. Over 60 patriots were killed by the communist regime. Dozens more were put in prison to languish in the dark cells, forced to work in degrading conditions. “Thousands others endured prison terms, torture in the hands of the regime’s investigators, pain for the years of violent abduction and their families lost forever,” Basha said.
