Rama: Customs unification with North Macedonia, ultimate goal

TIRANA, July 31 /ATA/- By Maela Marini/ Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Monday that the unification of customs between Albania and North Macedonia remains the ultimate goal of both countries.

Prime Minister Rama was at the Qafë Thana border point, where the new border program “One stop – One check” between Albania and North Macedonia comes into effect today.

In his remarks on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that it goes without saying that this is an important step forward, but the ultimate goal for us is unification of customs.

“Of course, it will come with the fully-fledged integration of Albania and North Macedonia in the European Union, but we don’t have to wait for the European Union to advance this idea,” said Rama.

Prime Minister pointed out that “there was a lot of skepticism and mockery when we started this process with the so-called ‘minischengen,’ then with the ‘Open Balkan'”.

“Meanwhile, the results speak better every day for the simple reason of a process like this: ‘To make the space between us a space where we interact and live together like in the EU, without waiting to fully integrate into the EU,'” he said.
