TIRANA, May 10 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama, also leader of the ruling Socialist Party, called on Albanian citizens on Wednesday to vote for the Socialist mayoral candidates in the Sunday’s local elections, saying any vote for the candidates backed by the former PM Sali Berisha and former President Ilir Meta would run counter the national interest and the dignity of the national flag.
The government head stated in a concluding campaign meeting in the southern city of Fier that Albania’s allies that want the country to become economically stronger have declared ex-PM Berisha persona non-grata for major corruption and democracy undermining efforts.
“And how one should behave when the allies, without whom Albania would have been totally lost, and Kosovo wouldn’t have existed as an independent state, tell us that Berisha has committed major corruption and has undermined Albanian democracy, has threatened national security and therefore is unwanted person. He should be merely removed and Fier citizens have already refused him constantly,” PM Rama stated.
The government head said that this appeal is addressed also to the opposition supporters and urged them to back Socialist candidates in the elections.
