Hohmann: No EU membership without successful reform in justice

TIRANA, May 10/ATA/- Ambassador of the European Union Christiane Hohmann, present at the conference on the topic “Judicial practice of the Supreme Court, from national identity to universal values”, in the framework of the 110th anniversary of the Supreme Court and the Day of Justice, stated that the reform in justice must have deep roots.

In her speech, Hohmann said that, “Today, we celebrate the 110th anniversary of the Supreme Court and this deserves to be congratulated for everything it has achieved. Our message is clear: There is no membership in the EU without a successful reform of the justice system in Albania”.

She underlined that it has been a long journey, but this journey is not over yet.

“We are at a critical moment because the key institutions of justice have been created or recreated. The reform must take deep roots. It will have to show that it is strong enough to face or resist any kind of unseen and inappropriate influences, and for this, transparency, high integrity and better quality of justice are required,” stated the EU ambassador in Tirana.

The vetting process continues to move forward, but once it is over, Councils must maintain the spirit of vetting,” said Hohmann.

She underlined that the members of the Councils are expected to act in accordance with very clear aspects related to their work because they hold in their hands not only justice, but also the future of Albania’s membership in the EU.

“A better and quality justice starts with dealing with the cases that have been brought. The old saying: ‘Justice delayed is justice denied’ is still true today. It is just as important to understand that delayed justice undermines citizens’ trust in justice”, stated the EU ambassador./p.s./
