INSTAT: On average, 3% less children every year

TIRANA, Dec  18 /ATA/ The population of Albania, on January 1, 2021, referring to INSTAT data, is 2,829,741 inhabitants, of whom 579,203 are children (0-17 years old).

As a result of the decline in the population by 1.6%, during the last five years (2017-2021), the number of this age group has also been decreasing, recording an average of 3% less children every year.

The ratio of the population age groups 10-19 years (adolescents) and 15-29 years (young people) to the total population is 12.4% and 22.7%, respectively.

The Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) published on Monday the report “Indicators of the Welfare of Children, Adolescents and Young People in Albania. Data on the time period 2017-2021,” according to which, compared to 2017, the share of these age groups is decreasing.

At the region level, the ratio of children is higher in Kukës (24.7% of the region’s population), while the lowest in Vlora (18.3%).

During the last five years (2017-2021), the number of children has been gradually decreasing in all regions, with the most significant decline in Gjirokastër and Berat (24% and 20% respectively).

While Tirana and Durrës have the smallest decrease (respectively 3% and 6%), compared to the beginning of the period, this is also attributed to the flow of internal migration, which has already turned them into the two counties with the highest population concentration in the country.

Population projections, made for the years 2019-2031, show that 2021 corresponds with the low growth scenario, where mortality and migration are high, while birth rate is low.

Population projections with this scenario predicted a population of 2,841,549. If this scenario pans out, in 2031 the ratio of 0-17 age group to the total population is expected to drop to 17.7%.
