TIRANA, March 30 /ATA/ –By I. Vata/ – The State Election Commissioner, Ilirjan Celibashi, told a press conference on Thursday that yesterday’s announcement by the Prime Minister Edi Rama about a significant pay hike for the public employees doesn’t run counter the Electoral Code provisions, as the law prohibits granting benefits to certain categories four months or less before the general or parliamentary elections only.
According to Celibashi, these Electoral Code provisions do not apply to mayoral elections.
“Each and everyone could have his or her own comments about the provisions of the Electoral Code. But we should respect the law only, namely the Electoral Code in this case. I might also have my own opinion regarding certain statements or decisions, as they may not resonate with my own principles. However, according to the Electoral Code, these prohibitions apply to the general elections only,” he said.
“In general, the Electoral Code prohibits certain decisions by public institutions only four months ahead of the election date until a new post-election government is formed. However, there are certain prohibitions that apply to general elections only. I personally think it would have been best if such regulation was to apply to mayoral elections too,” Celibashi stated.
