Opposition MP: Amendments to law on Academic of Science runs counter public interest

TIRANA, March 21 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party, Ina Zhupa, commented Tuesday the proposed amendments to the law on the Academy of Science, saying the legislation proposed by two Socialist Party lawmakers was unconstitutional and illegal, running counter the public interest.

In a press statement, Zhupa said that the legal amendments are merely part of the ongoing political conjuncture at the expense of science and scientific research and run counter public interest.

“The Academy of Science unfortunately has been operating in illegitimacy over years now, because the Academy’s President was not a scientist, but was in the meantime a party chairman when appointed to the post, brutally violating the law. The legality of such an institution is directly related to reliability and activity in the service of values, and not anti-values,” Zhupa said.

According to her, the current President of the Academy of Science has never reported at Parliament since his appointment to the post four years ago.

“The battle for the Academy is not a battle for names, but a battle for science, for history, for dignity and legitimacy. Its political and insidious capture affects the pillar of intellectuals who should be at the forefront of discussions of national, economic, identity and social issues,” Zhupa said.
