TIRANA, March 2 /ATA/ – The U.S. Department of State has dismissed as absurd the allegations of corruption leveled against senior U.S. officials by Albania’s main opposition Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha.
In an exclusive statement for the Albanian “Report TV”, the U.S. Department of State branded Berisha’s accusations as ridiculous.
“The accusations hurled by Sali Berisha, who has been designated by the Secretary of State for involvement in significant corruption, are absurd. The United States of America is clear about our commitment to democracy and the fight against corruption,” the Department of State said in its statement.
With the mayoral elections in Albania due a little more than a month away, the United States has issued direct calls on the political parties for fair elections in the country.
“We encourage all political parties to engage in constructive discourse and support free and fair elections,” the Department noted in its statement.
