TIRANA , Feb 15 /AT/ The Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) announces that the Population and Housing Census will begin on September 18 of this year.
According to INSTAT, the Population and Housing Census for data collection in the field will last 6 weeks.
The aim of Census is to provide Parliament, the government, local authorities and civil society with reliable statistical information necessary for the planning and implementation of general development policies, for scientific research, as well as for having a good understanding of the demographic, economic and social situation of the country.
Businesses also need Census data to determine where to locate stores, to estimate potential labor force and to assess buyer markets, etc.
The Census is important because the production of Census results every ten years is a worldwide requirement and helps Albania in the process of EU integration.
The Census data will make it possible to develop a statistical register of buildings and dwellings and a statistical register of the residential population, which can serve in the future as a basis for conducting the Census based on the registers.
Knowing the number and structure of the population by age and gender is vital for our country, both nationally and locally, as well as within different communities. Without national and local information on the population, its features, education, employment and health care status, our public services and businesses cannot serve our communities properly.
In 2023, for the first time, responses will be recorded by pollsters on tablets. The answer will take less time than answering a paper-based questionnaire.
The census requires information on the demographic, social and economic characteristics of individuals. This includes questions about age, gender, relationships between family members, place of birth, education level, employment status, ethnicity, religion, disability, and living conditions.
INSTAT employees strictly adhere to the principle of statistical confidentiality and the law on maintaining confidentiality, to handle data responsibly and to keep respondents’ information private.
It is the duty of every citizen to participate in the Census. According to the law, every person who, during the period in which the Census will be carried out, is an ordinary resident within the territory of the Republic of Albania, is obliged to provide the information required in the Census questionnaires, in a complete, accurate and reliable manner .
The only exceptions are questions about ethnic identity, religion and language, for which you can choose the option “Prefer not to answer.”
The Population and Housing Census was planned to take place in 2020, but was initially postponed due to pandemic, and after that was postponed for 2021 due to the parliamentary elections, while in August 2022 it was postponed due to failure to ensure the necessary tools in time, in this case the tablets for gathering information on the site.
The last census was conducted in 2011, which showed that the population was 2,821,977, a decrease of 8%, from the 2001 Census.
