Gjirokastra Castle, more visitors in January

TIRANA, February 7/ATA/ The city of Gjirokastra and its cultural and historical monuments continue to attract a high number of visitors even during this early year.

Gjirokastra Regional Directorate of National Culture reported that, “There has been an increase of the tourist visits to Gjirokastra Castle for the period January 1-31, 2023 compared to the same period last year”.

“During this period, 2,701 thousand visitors were at the castle or 1,914 more visitors than during the same period in 2022”, Gjirokastra Directorate wrote in a post on social media.

The castle is historically connected with the city of Gjirokastra and was mentioned for the first time as a city and castle in 1336.

However, different historians think that the existence of the Stone Castle is earlier. This castle would have its culmination in the period of the Pashalik of Ioannina when Ali Pasha Tepelena would consider a series of new constructions or other interventions, giving the Gjirokastra Castle the architectural and construction physiognomy it has today.

Thanks to the historical and architectural values that the stone castle of Gjirokastra carries, it continues to remain the most preferred monument to be visited by local and foreign tourist groups on their guides and trips in Gjirokastra area./k.s/p.s./
