PM Rama: Neurosurgeons successfully perform delicate brain procedure on conscious patient

TIRANA, Jan 15 /ATA/- The neurosurgery team at University Hospital Centre in Tirana performed a rare and extremely delicate procedure on a 24-year-old patient who was awake during the entire operation, Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Sunday.

The government head noted that the delicate brain surgery on the aware patient is a rare procedure performed in the best hospitals in Europe, but the rare procedure has been also successfully performed by the neurosurgery team at Mother Teresa University Hospital Centre, saving the life of a 24-year-old man.

PM Rama expressed gratitude to surgeons and medical personnel that are clearly proving that the country’s health care system has been transformed over the past few years, yet a lot remain to be done in this system.

Doctors detected the tumor in the brain of the young man few years ago, but they decided to perform the procedure only recently.

As the tumor kept growing, surgeons were forced to perform a procedure called “awake craniotomy,” which is much like standard brain surgery, with one critical difference as the patient is awake.
