Defence Minister: Water inflow, discharges from dam significantly decrease

TIRANA, Nov 21 /ATA/ – Water inflow into Albania’s main dams has decreased following the heavy downpour across the country in the last two days, the Minister of Defence Niko Peleshi told reporters on Monday, as he inspected firsthand the situation at “Berdica Arch” area in the city of Shkodra, accompanied by the Minister of State for the Relations with Parliament, Elisa Spiropali.

Peleshi said that the situation in the affected area has significantly improved in the last 24 hours.

“Traffic along the main national road was paralyzed until a few moments ago due to the huge water inflow triggered by yesterday’s heavy rains. We are returning from the village of Obot, where a considerable land area is still under water,” Defence Minister said.

“The good news is that the water inflow has decreased and the water discharges from the Vau i Dejes hydropower plant have also been reduced to maximum. Therefore, the energy situation at the cascade is improving and the flood waters are gradually receding,” he said.

Peleshi reiterated that 50 families, or 200 individuals, were evacuated from their homes following the floods in Shkodra municipality.
