Rama: Facilities for new Nanotechnology unit are ready

TIRANA, Oct  3 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Monday that “our support for the new Nanotechnology unit in Albania is unwavering and I am confident that we will host even the upcoming edition of the congress in Tirana with the concrete result and reality of the unit, which will be up and running within a year.”

In his remarks at the International Conference on Trends in Nanotechnology, he said that “the project worth EUR 20 mln that you have not been able to absorb will be won based on the fact that there is a unit here that is operational and for the moment we are satisfied with the amount of over 1 million euros that you won from the EU.”

Prime Minister Rama said that “I strongly believe that today in this second international congress in Tirana there is a concrete commitment, materialized with 26 groups working from different countries, which gives us the opportunity to see the next step, that of a Nanotechnology unit, the step of moving NanoAlb into a facility which I promised to the professor. We are ready and will gladly accompany you to examine it and choose together the necessary space to start this process.”

PM said that “I am encouraged and excited today here at this congress where no  delegate present is unfamiliar to me, instead they represent a joint effort in a direction where our country has more to do as compared to any other direction.”

“Minister Kushi brought up an example that I would like to repeat, fact that  the University of Tirana has entered into a new spirit with a new awareness about the necessity of accessing European funds through meaningful projects that strengthen not only the financial basis of scientific research, but also the belief that we are not only unlike others in the negative aspect, but we can do a lot in the positive aspect. Quadrupling European funds for scientific research at the university and increasing 10 times from nearly 40 people to more than 400 people  the university staff in accessing these funds in the span of only two years thanks to the leadership of the University of Tirana is extremely significant, encouraging and meaningful and to sent a message across to girls and boys who upon finishing high school with honors, the first idea that comes to their mind is leaving to continue their studies at a European university,” Rama said.

Rama went on saying that it is a legitimate idea and a legitimate right to aim for the most prestigious European universities on the basis of excellent results attained here in high school.

“It is a fact that Albanian girls and boys who finish high school in Albania excel in the most prestigious universities and it is sheer luck that their grade point average (GPA) in European universities is among the highest GPSs in those universities, which shows that the base in education has been strengthened and improved, but on the other hand, it means more responsibility to enhance the university.”

“In this regard, we have many directions that we are working on and we need to increase capacities and improve results, and definitely the new unit of Nanotechnology will serve to strengthen this trust and increase these results,” said Rama.

The International Conference on Trends in Nanotechnology is a marked event in the schedule of Albanian Nanoscience, because it further strengthens the cooperation between the Academy of Sciences of Albania and the “Phantoms” foundation in Spain, as one of the key actors in promoting interaction in this field.

This active involvement exposes Albanian science to the most innovative European and world systems even through these scientific events.
