TIRANA, Sept 25 /ATA/ – Intense work is underway to deliver on the Vjosa National Park projects as part of the Albanian government commitment to establish Vjosa River park, widely seen as the last wild river in Europe.
The Wild River National Park will protect the entire network of the Vjosa from the Greek border to the Adriatic Sea, including the free-flowing tributaries. This is something that has never been done before in Europe.
Prime Minister Edi Rama said via a post on the social media on Sunday, marking World Rivers Day, that a team of Albanian and international experts are conduction a joint research along the Vjosa River and its tributaries.
The five-day research activity will look into all main components of the river system, including its free-flowing tributaries, the protected areas and the nature monuments.
Experts will also explore ways of development of eco-tourism and will hold daily meetings with local communities, local government authorities, interest groups and the non-governmental organizations.
A memorandum of understanding was signed in June between the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the U.S. environmental company Patagonia to designate the Vjosa river area a national park, a long-awaited and welcome move from environmentalists all over the world designed to create the first national park of a wild river in Europe.
The path to a National Park is very complex; therefore, the government asked for help from international experts, including Patagonia, in tandem with local experts.
