Opposition lawmaker: Cyber attack put Albania’s national security to test

TIRANA, Sept 7 /ATA/-By I.Vata/ – The main opposition Democratic Party lawmaker Jorida Tabaku stated Wednesday that a cyber attack, which blocked several online public services in July, was a challenge to Albania’s national security.

Via a post on the social media, the opposition lawmaker Tabaku called on the government to adopt appropriate measures in a bid to boost the cyber security of important infrastructure and improve cyber security strategies.

She noted that “the state budget has spent millions of dollars for cyber security programmes, yet the outcome leaves much to be desired.

“The cyber attack that hit the country earlier this summer was indeed a clear message and an indicator of our vulnerability put our national security to test. Millions of dollars has been spent from the state budget for cyber security and the National Agency for Information Society, while the results leave much to be desired. Should anyone be held responsible? The fresh public evidence should be reported at Parliament and the National Security Committee in particular. Furthermore, measures should be taken by the government to enhance the cyber security, and I mean serious measures and not like procurement procedures that led to this situation. At the digital era, a NATO member cannot afford and tolerate that the national security be breached in similar cases,” she said.
