TIRANA, Aug 20 /ATA/ –By I. Vata/ – Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj told reporters on Saturday that the governing Socialist Party (SP) “is not afraid of a coalition between the Democratic Party of the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and the Freedom Party headed by former President Ilir Meta, portraying the opposition duo as “moral ruins.”
In a televised interview during a visit to Kyiv, where he pledged support for reconstruction of the war-torn Ukraine, Mayor Veliaj, also a senior Socialist official, commented on yesterday’s statements issued by Meta and Berisha, who stated that opposition must forge a coalition ahead of next year’s mayoral elections a day ago, hinting of a possible cooperation between the main opposition DP and the Freedom Party led by Ilir Meta.
Veliaj said that SP is not afraid of the two, “as both Berisha and Meta can now offer nothing to Albania”.
“It is a coalition that could be multiplied with a zero. They can offer nothing to Albania. One feels proud when name of Albania is highlighted and respectfully mentioned –despite the tragic context – while visiting Kyiev. Although I represent perhaps the smallest country, the very fact that Albania has improved its name and reputation, despite its modes population and economy, makes me very proud. I don’t know whether there is any world leaders who would meet both Sali Berisha or Ilir Meta,” Veliaj said.
Tirana Mayor said that Albania needs a strong leader like Edi Rama.
