TIRANA, August 19/ATA/ Management Plan for Karaburun-Sazan Marine and Coastal Protected Area (MCPA) has been developed within the framework of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project “Improving Coverage and Management Effectiveness of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas in Albania – Phase II”.
In this context, there has been carried out the monitoring of the quality of the eco-system and the modeling of the impact of climate change on marine habitats.
For the first time, there has been monitored the water temperatures in the Karaburun-Sazan Marine National Park, as well as in the surrounding areas, at several depths: -5 meters, -12 meters and -25 meters. The measurements were made in 10 distributed stations of the marine park.
This monitoring, the first of its kind in Albania, was carried out in cooperation with the Albanian Diving Federation, in coordination with national and international experts as well as the relevant authorities.
As a result, for the first time there has been created a dynamic model of water column temperatures in the Karaburun-Sazan Marine National Park and its surrounding territories which will serve as a basis for assessing the impacts of climate change in the future.
Coping with climate change requires commitment at several levels to analyze the extent of its impact on the environment as well as to take measures to minimize the negative impacts.
The Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development as well as the National Agency of Protected Areas support this project. /j.p/p.s./
