TIRANA, May 12 /ATA/ – Construction of Skavica hydropower plant on Drin River will play a significant role in Albania reaching its ambition of energy self-sufficiency, enhance security of the country’s electricity supply, improve management of the cascade and, as a regulating dam, it will ensure greater protection against the devastating floods which impact the downstream communities in Shkoder area annually.
Albanian Power Corporation said Thursday that work is underway on the first phase of Skavica HPP project.
According to the Power Corporation, the project’s first phase includes feasibility study, engineering, environmental and social analysis.
Skavica HPP project will preserve water upstream on the Drin River, prevent flooding and boost average output in the rest of the hydropower plants on this cascade.
“Skavica HPP is of great importance for Albania, including 210 megawatts of increased renewable energy output and control of seasonal floods. The construction of the Skavica HPP, a project of national interest, will allow Albania to establish full independence from the energy imports and become a regional energy hub,” the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku said.
Albania should diversify its electricity generation sources as the country is currently almost totally dependent on hydropower for electricity supply.
