Commissioner Várhelyi inaugurates two EU-funded educational facilities in Kamza

TIRANA, April 28 /ATA/ – European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi inaugurated Thursday two new educational facilities in Kamza Municipality, Albania, rebuilt after the devastating earthquake under the EU4schools programme.

The EU Commissioner attended inauguration of “Dom Nikollë Kaçorri”nine-year school  and kindergarten No. 8 in Kamza Municipality during a ceremony also attended by the Minister of Education and Sports Evis Kushi, as well as the EU Chargé d’affaires in Albania, Alexis Hupin, Resident Representative of UNDP, Monica Merino, Kamza Mayor Rakip Suli, pupils and local residents.

Commissioner Várhelyi  said that the EU is committed to create a better, safer and more creative environment for future generations of Albania.

The European Union launched its 75 million euros worth programme as part of its financial commitment during the International Donor’s Conference, organized in Brussels on February 17, 2020. The programme is being implemented by the UNDP in cooperation with the Albanian Government and targets indicatively rehabilitation of 58 educational facilities in 11 quake-affected municipalities across the country.

Around 24.000 pupils, kindergarten children and students will benefit from renovated or reconstructed education facilities. Around 1 million community members will also benefit from this intervention.

Reconstructed educational facilities are not only resilient to future earthquakes under the principle “Building Back Better and Building Back Together,” but they also meet European standards regarding energy efficiency, green spaces, water and sewerage, sports facilities and internet provision.
