Xhaçka: Albania, on its way to EU membership

TIRANA, March 28/ATA/ Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka attended today in the National Council for European Integration roundtable on the challenges of EU integration.

First of all, the minister praised the role of the outgoing EU Ambassador Luigi Soreca in Albania.

Further on, the minister emphasized that, “It was Albania that applied for EU membership and not vice versa. And undoubtedly in the difficult course of transformation that requires the fulfilment of this major national objective, it is us who must prove to the EU the progress of transformation, be it legal, political, economic, social, administrative, so it is us who must show to the EU the progress we have made in the approximation and gradual harmonization with the whole EU framework. Today, no one can deny that extraordinary work we have done in this direction,” she said.

“But, today that we are talking – maybe it is too early – we see that nothing has changed in concrete terms. In fact, it seems that the war in Ukraine is playing the same role today that Parliamentary elections in the major EU countries have usually played, becoming a source of distraction and a reason to postpone decision-making and concrete steps in relation to the integration of the region, stressed Minister Xhaçka.

The minister concluded by saying that, “We will continue to work with the reforms and for the Europeanization of the country, just as we will continue to work with all our possibilities for the deepening of regional cooperation as a necessary condition for peace, stability and the development of the Western Balkans”./jp/p.s./
