Xhaçka: Albania supports protection of Ukraine’s territorial integrity

TIRANA, Feb 5 /ATA/ – The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Olta Xhaçka stated Saturday that Albania’s position on Ukraine has been coherent and the country is totally committed with other allied and partner countries to address the tense situation in and around Ukraine.

“Our position and our commitment have actually been coherent. In our capacity as a NATO member country, we have been deeply committed to immediately addressing the tense situation in and around Ukraine together with other Allied and Partner countries,” Foreign Minister said in her remarks at a joint press conference with the Prime Minister Edi Rama earlier on the day.

“Our position has been made public and we have clearly expressed it at the United Nations, as well as the NATO high-level meetings in January focusing on deployment of Russian troops at Ukrainian borders.

Albania – Xhaçka went on saying – has repeatedly underlined the strategic importance of the unity and cohesion among the NATO members in face of a challenge to the European security and has strongly supported the principles and the values on which NATO has been founded, as well as the shared commitments of the Alliance.

“Albania has expressed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, underscoring the sovereign right of every nation to choose its pathway and decide its future, underlining at the same time that NATO is a defence Alliance, whose mission is to guarantee collective security of the member nations,” Xhaçka said.

Therefore, in line with the EU – Xhaçka added – Albania has unhesitatingly condemned Russia’s continued aggressive actions, has called on Russia, together with European countries and NATO partner countries, to act in accordance with international law and to engage in constructive dialogue through international mechanisms.
