TIRANA, December 16 /ATA/ Governor of the Bank of Albania Gent Sejko stated during the year-end meeting with representatives of the second-tier commercial banks operating in our country that establishment of bigger banks through buying and selling process or through merger of banks will increase crediting potential.
“The banking sector will continue to get further consolidated next year. The loan portfolio remains the main contributor to its revenues and in order to maintain a competitive position, banks must maintain and increase its loan portfolio continuously,” said Sejko.
“The Bank of Albania, as the authority responsible for supervising 90% of the financial market, plays an important role in the process of approximation of the legal framework with that of the European Union. Additional capital requirements, which were introduced last year, are part of this process. Our goal is the careful presentation of these requirements, without harming the competitiveness of individual banks and limiting their potential for growth. This process extends over a long-term time frame and during this period, we will closely monitor the progress of the necessary capital creation and the fulfilment of the minimum requirement for own funds and accepted eligible liabilities (MREL), as well as we will carefully calibrate and flexibility of aggregate capital requirements, in order not to hinder the organic and healthy growth of the banking activity. Meanwhile, the positive profit offers a sure support for the capital increase,” he said./j.p/r.e/p.s./
