TIRANA, October 22 /ATA/ Minister of Tourism and Environment Mirela Kumbaro stated that, “There are 6 waste processing plants that cover 74% of the population compared to 16% in 2013″.
In her speech during the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Edi Rama with the mayors and prefects for waste management and administration, Minister Kumbaro said that, “According to INSTAT data in 2013 about 50% of citizens’ waste went to the bin, the other half was thrown where possible, rivers, streams, shores, massacring this landscape that we today proudly describe and appreciate. We are even turning it into a tourism economy.”
“Of these 50% that were thrown in the bin, only 16% were organized to be stored in a landfill. 8 years later, I refer again to INSTAT, 82% of the collected waste and of these 69% were deposited in a landfill or waste treatment plant”, underlined Kumbaro.
Minister Kumbaro said that, “There were two end points in 2013, Bushati and Sharra and we are far from saying that Sharra was a landfill with waste treatment conditions, it was a major environmental massacre.”
“Today, we have 6 treatment plants, Albania is not as large as China, it is a territory that by decision of the National Council of the Territory is divided into 7 zones of integrated waste management”, – added Kumbaro./k.s/j.p/p.s./
