PM Rama: No hydropower plants to be built on Vjosa river

TIRANA, Oct 18 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama vowed Monday that no hydropower plants would be built on the Vjosa river as long as he and his Socialist Party govern the country.

“No hydropower plants will be ever built on the Vjosa river as long as the Socialist Party is in power,” PM Rama said on a TV interview, saying that the attempts to install a string of hydropower plants on the cascade of one of the continent’s last free-flowing rivers have been prevented for good.

The government head noted he himself is member of the initiative to protect Vjosa river.

He added that the idea to protect the wild river was initially tabled by the Socialist Party.

“We are the ones who decided for protection of Vjosa river. A series of hydropower plants were projected to be built there when we called for the river’s protection,” Rama said.
