Water level, inflows into Drini cascade at minimum due to prolonged drought

TIRANA, Oct 6 /ATA/ – The Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) said Tuesday that the water level and inflows into the Fierza dam – one of the three largest on the river Drin – have shrunk due to the prolonged drought during the summer season.

The power corporation told Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) that the water level at Fierza hydropower plant is 270.69 m, around three meters lower than the average water level during this period. The current water inflows are estimated at 40 cubic meters per second, while the daily electricity production is 1990 MWh.

The water level at Koman HPP is at 170.71 meters, down from the maximum level of 175.5 meters. The water inflows are estimated at 15 and the daily production is estimated 3400 MWh.

The water level at Vau i Dejes stands at 73.28 meters from 76 m of its maximum quota. The water inflows are estimated at a minimum of only 7 cubic meters per second and the electricity production is 2160 MWh.

The cascade built on the Drin River is the largest in the Balkans by installed capacity, as well as by the size of the hydropower plants, and normally supplies more than 70 per cent of Albania’s total net demand, generating low cost clean energy for household customers.

The Fierza dam is considered the backbone of the electricity generating system as it regulates the flow water for two other major dams, Koman and Vau i Dejes.
