Kurti to the Quint ambassadors: Decision on reciprocity is neither provocation nor discrimination against anyone

TIRANA, Sept 21 /ATA/ After introducing the reciprocity measure for the license plates, Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, received the ambassadors of the Quint countries and the Head of the European Union Office in Kosovo.

This meeting focused on yesterday’s decision regarding the temporary license plates for vehicles with Serbian license plates and entering the territory of the Republic of Kosovo.

Sources from the Prime Minister’s Office say that Kurti informed the ambassadors that there were no incidents at any border crossing yesterday and today. He said that yesterday’s decision was neither provocation nor discrimination against anyone and that the Kosovo Police forces have performed their duty with professionalism, correctness and efficiency.

“The law has been implemented, ensuring equal treatment of the citizens,” said Kurti, stressing that special units are on the ground only to protect the border police and border crossings.

“They have been deployed there because dozens of protesters have blocked with vehicles the roads heading to border points 1 and 31 and those nearby. The police talked to protesters and did not harm them,” Prime Minister Kurti said, adding that freedom of movement is a right and a value that should not be infringed upon.

He also informed the ambassadors about the telephone conversation he had last night with the Vice President of the European Commission and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Mr. Josep Borrell.

Minister Sveçla said that our police officers are performing their duty to guarantee order and security. Serbian citizens have no reason to panic, he stressed. The measures put in place are not directed against them nor against anyone else. The police do not deal with the nationality of the passengers. They protect and respect all citizens without distinction, the minister said.

The ambassadors and Prime Minister Kurti agreed that peace , stability and security must be safeguarded, dialogue must continue and the situation must de-escalate.
