Negotiations, Merkel: EU should deliver on its commitment rather than set new conditions

TIRANA, Sept 14 /ATA/ German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday in Tirana that Albania has the full support of EU for opening of accession negotiations.

At the joint press conference in Tirana with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Merkel said that “I certainly do not intend to play an active political role, but I will remain a friend of the region and as such will give advice.”

“ I have seen several times the case of veto, but it is irrelevant to Albania and North Macedonia. I am hopeful. I have taken some steps forward and so far so good,’ Merkel said.

The German Chancellor said that “of course Albania and North Macedonia have had the support of all EU countries to open the accession negotiations, it is the intergovernmental conference that we are talking about.”

Merkel pointed out that, “EU member states should on the one hand say what the conditions need to be met for starting the accession process, and we have said what needs to change in the justice system, and once these conditions are met, the EU should keep its pledge rather than set other requirements, because for reasons of domestic policy in certain countries, this is not possible and this brings about disappointment, and “I understand the sense of frustration that comes from this,” said Chancellor Merkel.
